Our Promises to the Planet
Sustainable Materials, Ethical Practices, Circular Impact
A note from our Co-Founder:
I believe transparency is the key to everything. It isn't just words. We're open about the effort that goes into creating our products and all the hands they touch. Making something as simple as a pair of leggings isn't so simple if you want to make it sustainably. That's why we share the many micro-decisions that go into our product development process at Girlfriend Collective. Our customers want, and have a right, to know what goes into creating the clothes they wear and love.

Recycled Materials
Not to brag, but in 2016 Girlfriend Collective was among the first to make performance activewear from recycled materials. Since then, we’ve perfected our range made from post-consumer plastic waste. It includes five core premium recycled fabrics: Compressive, FLOAT, Reset, Luxe, and SuperTrack. (Pro tip: head to our Fabric Guide to discover your fave).
We’re always interested in new sustainable fabrics, and will occasionally introduce them to our collections. If (and only if) they get your seal of approval, we’ll add them to our core offering.

Our leggings are made from trash
Almost all synthetic activewear is made from plastic derived from fossil fuels. Instead of taking more oil out of the ground (where it belongs), we make our leggings from pre-existing materials. We use post-consumer plastic bottles - the ones that would otherwise clog landfills and pollute the seas.
To give them ultimate comfortability and durability, we use a combo of recycled polyester and spandex to make our collections. We figured out that it takes around 25 post-consumer plastic bottles to make each pair of our leggings and 11 for our bras. That’s a lot of trash!
Every product page shares how much water, plastic bottles, and CO2 an item saves compared to conventional manufacturing in a mini Sustainability Report. We also list the fabric composition for all our pieces, btw.
How we turn plastic bottles into wardrobe staples
Step 1: Collection
We source all our post-consumer water bottles from our amazing partners in Taiwan who’ve been in the recycling biz for decades and produce fabrics certified by the Global Recycled Standard. Big tick.
Step 2: SORTING
Not all plastic bottles are made the same. Who knew? They have to be sorted into their respective categories (#1, #2, #3, and #4 plastic) before being processed.
Step 3: CLEANING
Once sorted, the water bottles are given a thorough wash to remove any sticky labels and caps making sure they’re sparkly clean!
Step 4: CHIPPING
The bottles now head to a big machine to be shredded into tiny, tiny flakes which are then melted down into pellets.
Step 5: Polymerization
Now, the science! The melted pellets are extruded (spun and pulled like taffy) into yarn, which is then spun into thread.
Step 6: KNITTING
It may not seem like it, but making quality fabric takes time and ultra-precision. Good thing we’ve got one of the best knitting factories, which makes our fabric softer, longer-lasting, and better performing than a standard single jersey.
Step 7: Garment making
The recycled fabric is then sent to our SA8000-certified cut and sew factories to be made into the leggings you know and love.
100% of our collections use over 50% recycled polyester
Toxic-Free Clothes
Better for the planet, better for your health
There can be a lot of scary stuff hiding in the fibers of your clothing like BPAs, BPS, and PFAs.
It can be confusing to know what’s what, so here’s a quick rundown.

Ethical Manufacturing
We think it’s important to know and care about the people who make your clothes. Making garments is labor intensive. From weaving to cutting, to sewing, it takes around 14 pairs of hands to make our leggings. We believe they should be taken care of. From the very start, we committed to ethical manufacturing that looks after people and the planet.
Step inside our certified factories

Recycled Materials
Turning trash into treasure
Our primary recycling partner in Taiwan is a global leader in eco-friendly, high-quality textiles. When we visited the facility, we were blown away.
It’s not only trusted by the Taiwanese government but also certified by them, too. This certification is more than a stamp of approval - it ensures strict accountability for every step, from intake to output.
Once upon a time, the small island nation of Taiwan was overwhelmed by its waste. But it managed to turn things around and now recycles 55% of its waste (compared to 35% in the U.S.) thanks to government initiatives and a strong sense of community.
Believe it or not, recycling isn't just another chore in Taiwan - it's a community affair. Each night, neighbors gather to sort waste, turning something your parents would nag you to do into a social experience.
We also spent time with the Tzu Chi Foundation, a volunteer group that brings recycling to rural areas across Taipei. Led by retirees, their micro-recycling centers provide access, education, and a shared commitment to protecting the planet.

Cut & Sew
Stitched sustainably, made responsibly
We work with two core sewing partners in Vietnam. Both are SA8000 certified to guarantee fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for workers.
Our primary factory is in Thygesen, in northern Vietnam’s Hung Yen Province, and produces around 80% of our garments. It’s part of Thygesen Textile Group, founded in Denmark in 1931, which has nearly a century of sewing expertise.
Our secondary factory is in Tuntex, in southern Vietnam’s Soc Trang Province, handling around 10% of production. It has roots in a dyeing and finishing facility established in Tainan City, Taiwan, in 1954.
Since our production fluctuates, where we produce the remaining 10% of our production is dependent on how many things like socks, bags, and underwear we order. As you know, we hate waste, so we try to avoid unnecessary overproduction where possible.

DYE HOUSE
Adding color, not compromise
Dyeing is often an environmentally harmful process. Many facilities dump chemical dyes into nearby rivers, turning the water bright blue or red - the same water local communities rely on. This harms people, crops, and biodiversity. Unsurprisingly, this didn't fly with us.
Since day one, we’ve partnered with the same dye house, where we use OEKO-TEX-certified safe dyes. Every drop of wastewater is sent to our treatment plant just 100 feet away. There, eco-friendly dyes and stray fibers are filtered out, and the water is tested for safety. Only after the Taiwanese EPA's approval is the water released back into healthy streams.
And what about leftover dye mud? Instead of dumping it in landfills, we donate it to a local facility where it’s transformed into paving stones. Something to think about when you stroll down the sidewalk.

CERTIFICATIONS
Going above and beyond
Being SA8000-certified is key to our commitment to ethical manufacturing. This certification sets global standards for workers’ rights, ensuring safe conditions, fair wages, and the right to unionize. While similar to Fair Trade, SA8000 focuses specifically on factory environments rather than farming.
For us, it’s just the starting point. Everyone deserves work perks. We offer free lunch (and dinner for night shift workers) and guided exercise breaks because no one likes to be a desk gremlin (us included). We also provide free health checkups every six months and health insurance, something many employers deduct from wages. We believe in going the extra mile because we believe in treating our workers with the respect they deserve.
We want you to feel confident in where your Girlfriend Collective pieces come from, which is why we’ve included every bylaw SA8000 puts forth for their certification. Every factory we work with is regularly audited to ensure compliance, so you can trust the process and the people behind it.
The fashion industry accounts for around 20% of the world's wastewater.

Circularity & Recyclability
We think old water bottles look better on you than they do clogging landfills - and we'd like to keep things that way. We work hard to make sure our clothes don't meet the same fate as the 85% of textiles that end up in landfills by giving you options to responsibly part ways with your stuff. Our Girlfriend to Girlfriend marketplace and ReGirlfriend recycling program keep things in circulation, in your wardrobes, and out of landfills.
Recycle or Resell
Re-wearing is caring

Girlfriend to Girlfriend
Ready to part ways with a piece that’s too good to donate or recycle? We’ve got you. Girlfriend to Girlfriend is your go-to marketplace for buying and selling pre-loved Girlfriend pieces. Sell your verified second hand styles, earn 100% brand credit toward your next set(s) (or 80% cash), and give your cute clothes a happy new home far, far away from the landfill. The more ethically made activewear we keep in circulation, the better.

ReGirlfriend
ReGirlfriend, powered by SuperCircle, is our recycling program for Girlfriend and non-Girlfriend brand clothing. Originally created to turn old Girlfriend pieces into new ones, we’ve since expanded to include ALL brands because circularity shouldn’t stop at our door. Send us your clothes, no matter the brand, and be rewarded with store credit for helping us keep textiles out of landfills.
It’s simple: log in, start a takeback, and get a free shipping label to send your stuff. Depending on their condition, your clothes will either be recycled into raw materials or upcycled into new fibers. And while recycling isn’t perfect (some mixed-material items may be downcycled) you can trust that nothing we take back will ever end up in a landfill. Pinky promise.
85% of all textiles end up in landfills every year.
Sustainability Steps
Doing our part, and then some
Materials, manufacturing, recycling, and packaging are just pieces of the bigger sustainability puzzle.

The Girlfriend Collective community's impact
1% of every Girlfriend Collective purchase supports a nonprofit. The fun part: you get to choose which ones.
We swap them out from time to time to reflect timely causes that need our support or if we want to work towards a new goal together. But, the reason we started this program has always stayed the same. We’re a team of people who believe in giving back to the planet and the people who live on it.
Working with Beam has given us a chance to make a real difference with every single order. It helps us benefit causes you (and we) are passionate about - at no cost to you. Pay for your order as usual, and 1% of it comes out of our pocket and straight into those doing the good work!
