Did you know all synthetic fabrics shed tiny pieces of plastic called microfibers in the wash? (It’s true. Even your favorite cozy fleece, swimwear, underwear, and, yep, Girlfriend leggings.) This filter attaches to your home washing machine to capture these fibers before they can enter water streams, keeping microfibers out of the oceans and away from the creatures that inhabit them. Let’s clean this place up. Installation parts sold separately. Please note filters will ship separately of clothing and may take up to 14 days.

Other filters exist — but they’re expensive. We wanted ours to be affordable and accessible, something everyone could use with their home machines and install on their own. The way we see it: the more people who use washing machine filters, the more we can work together to keep water pollution at bay.

Installation parts sold separately. Please note filters will ship separately of clothing and may take up to 14 days.

  • Measures 10.25” wide, 11” long, and 6.5” high.
  • Made from polypropylene, a heavy duty plastic that is ideal for holding hot liquid (but you know washing your clothes in cold water is better for everyone, right?), and includes a 200 mesh steel filter that can capture particles as small as 72 microns. To put that into perspective, the leading washing bag and filter systems feature a 160-180 mesh made of plastic and claim a capture rate of between 90 and 99%. We are currently in the process of getting our own percentage certified by a third party and will update that information here when it’s ready.
  • Should be cleaned every ~3 loads. To do so, tilt the filter back to drain any excess water and dispose of the fibers in the trash. Microfibers should be thrown away inside a bag (to avoid polluting the air as well). We do not know of a way to recycle microfibers at this time, but we are hopeful for the future!
  • Works best when washing only synthetic garments, because organic fabrics often shed even more fibers (we are less worried about these as they are biodegradable). We recommend removing the mesh filter basket when washing organics to cut down on cleaning time.
