Of the 20 billion pairs made each year, an estimated 300 million end up in landfills in the U.S. alone. There, shoes can leak toxic chemicals and take anywhere from 40 to 1,000 years to decompose. We weren’t having it, so we made something better.
Made in the USA
This is Okabashi, our amazing partner in Buford, Georgia. Most shoes labeled as “recyclable” are currently downcycled, only partly recycled, or end up in a landfill anyway. But here at Okabashi they practice true recycling, turning old shoes into new shoes — into new shoes again.
“We look across the product lifecycle — from the materials to the manufacturing process to the longevity of our products and where they will end up,” says Sara Irvani, CEO of Okabashi.
“Being made locally means that there is a significantly reduced carbon footprint, our manufacturing process is closed loop, and we are proud to have developed vegan recyclable materials so we can reuse any scraps to prevent waste.”
“Often shoes are made by putting two pieces of cut material together — think of cutting cookies and throwing away all the scraps to landfill or the oceans. Then after a short wear, the disposable shoe also ends up in a landfill. By molding the shoe, we are able to design in comfort and reduce waste!”
